Purpose-Filled Leadership

There is an ongoing cry for better leaders, not only in the workplace but in the world. It’s a cry that has echoed, sometimes to deaf ears, across the ages. It’s a critical message to heed, particularly in eras of chaos. Effective leadership must become the norm, not the exception, in organizations, homes, charities, and capitals. From school boards to boardrooms, childcare to hospice, playgrounds and locker rooms to virtual spaces and shop floors. Where problems are to be solved, innovations concocted, comfort and aid administered, leadership is needed. Some could lead but do not yet believe it. Some think they are leading but are mistaken. And then there is the perpetual battle between lousy leaders and effective leaders, a distinction that most can recognize but few agree upon.

Who among them are the best to lead?

Those who have faced and conquered their inner challenges often possess the qualities and perspectives that make them outstanding leaders. The discouraged, underestimated, and overwhelmed who have committed to transforming into confident, competent leaders without becoming jerks. They are the best candidates because of their resilience, tenacity, empathy, and understanding. They possess humility, relatability, and self-awareness, having often seen firsthand the negative consequences of horrible behavior in lousy leaders. Not only do they have unique problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of the human experience, they have, perhaps most importantly, the motivation to make a positive difference.

We need to create a world where leadership is a positive force. The time for you to lead is now; the place to lead is where you stand.

  1. Disrupt the Status Quo: Good leaders must rise above the complacency that offers a safe harbor for poor leadership. Be active disruptors and challenge the norm, as smug contentment breeds mediocrity.
  2. Courageous Accountability: Good leadership demands accountability. Accountability fosters trust and growth when you hold yourselves and others responsible for actions and decisions, promptly acknowledge mistakes, and make amends.
  3. Truth Over Lies: In a world rife with misinformation, champion the truth. Confront falsehoods with unwavering honesty, finding common ground to lay a foundation for genuine progress.
  4. Curiosity and Collaboration: Curiosity is a powerful tool. Nurture it, cultivating questions that drive greater understanding, learning, and innovation. Curiosity uncovers new solutions, possibilities, and relationships. Collaborate with others to tackle formidable challenges and create what others deem impossible.
  5. Make a Positive Impact: Leadership’s real success is measured by the positive impact on the world — transforming lives, solving problems, improving communities, and doing so with empathy, compassion, dignity, and kindness, prioritizing others’ welfare over personal gain.
  6. Maximize Strengths: Effective leadership maximizes strengths, focusing on existing talents, skills, and abilities, not dwelling on perceived weaknesses.
  7. Continuous Self-Improvement: Acknowledge your imperfections, strive for constant self-improvement, learning, and evolving with each experience.
